All in the family in Palm Desert

Larry & Erlene BeneventoLarry and Erlene Benevento made it a true family affair in January when the pair each captured their divison in our annual two day visit to the desert.

Larry's two round 140 net total edged Dick Watson (142) in the Men's Division and Erlene's 151 bested Rene Jorgensen (153) in the Women's Division. Tom Johnson (145) was third in the Men's Division.

This year's two day event at Palm Desert's Desert Willow Golf Resort boasted a 33-player field, our largest turnout ever for a desert event. Players enjoyed cloudless skies, temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s and two excellent golf courses. A number of participants played practice rounds at The Classic Club and Escena Golf Club on Friday.

In Saturday's opening round on the Mountain View course, Larry Benevento fired an 81 (68 net) to take both low net and low gross prize money. Keith Hanson (82) was second low gross and Dick Watson (71) was second low net. Third low net went to Roger Goodrich (72) and Mervin James (73) edged Jim Brock (73) in a card-off for fourth.

Closest to the pin honors on Saturday went to Steve Horvath and Don Taylor.

In the Women's Division, Marilyn Watson (76) was first and Pam Rambaud (79) beat Renee Jorgensen (79) in a card-off for second.

On Day Two on the tougher Firecliff course, Larry Rambaud (79-69) repeated Benevento's opening day sweep when he won both low net and low gross. Second low gross went to Mike Laughlin (80). Kenn Freel (70) edged Gerry Kelly (70) in a card-off for second low net and Tom Johnson (71) was fourth. Fifth low net went to Jim Pescatore (72).

Closest to the pin honors on Sunday went to Keith Hanson and Debby Nelson.

In the Women's Division, Renee Jorgensen (74) beat Erlene Benevento (74) in a card-off and Pam Rambaud (79) was third.

Follow Sunday play, tournament participants and guests enjoyed lunch on the newly expanded patio at Desert Willow. Thanks to tournament hosts Tom McKinney and Jim Brock for staging this year's desert event.......a great start to another great year of MBGFR tournaments!
